What’s that all about then?
FiveThings wants to help brands understand New Marketing, how to approach online and make better decisions.
We’ve called it FiveThings because we believe there are five things that are the footprint of effective online marketing.
1. Be seen by your audience
2. Develop a voice for your brand
3. Create an content strategy
4. Know your audience individually
5. Analyse your activity, refine and develop
Read more, ask a question, join the conversation, stay in touch…

Develop a voice for your brand
It’s a Conversation out there.
Technology and consumers have changed the Web and how marketers and advertisers use it, and the content that appears there.
That’s 2.0 - the second generation of web-based communities and hosted services such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and collaborative tagging. They aim to facilitate creativity, collaboration, and sharing among users.
So Participation is now the 5th P of marketing (Price, Place, Promotion, Product + Participation). Which of these 2.0 environments do your audience spend time in, doing what? Can you be active there and how? Do you need a 2.0 environment of your own, a blog for example?
This is a primarily knowledge based environment where user-interactions generate content that gets published, managed and used through network applications – this has huge potential to strengthen and damage your brand. One thing’s for certain, silence won’t help. Time to start Conversation Marketing.
More to come on marketing in Social Networking Communities, which is most appropriate and where to start.

Be seen by your audience
Get visibility wherever they are.
If you search Google all the time for products and services, wouldn’t your customers? It’s the most visited site in Australia, New Zealand and the US. As a starting point, people are more likely to look you up there than by remembering your URL. And remember if you’re not on the first page of results based on the search terms which are most commonly attached to your product or service, effectively you’re not there at all.
Two things you need to know about, SEO and SEM. Okay I said Five things, these are sub things!
First, build/or rebuild your site so that it can be seen by the key search engines Google and Yahoo. This is called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
You can support this activity by buying paid Search terms, then you’ll appear as a paid listing when those terms are searched in the right column of Google. This is called Search Engine Marketing (SEM).
And there’s more, Banner advertising works, and a creative, interactive banner campaign in the right places can create brand visibility and traffic to your website. Email and Mobile marketing can be successful too if the information presented is relevant to the recipient, otherwise it’s junk.
In the short term SEM, and to a lesser extent other forms of advertising, will serve you well. In the longer term SEO is unarguably the best thing to do for your online visibility.
